Synthetic Oil vs. Regular Oil: What’s the Difference?

Adding oil to engine

If you’re a vehicle owner in Boulder, you understand just how important it is to maintain your car’s health. One way you can ensure your vehicle has a long life is by getting regular oil changes. Although, you may be wondering, “what’s the difference between synthetic vs. regular oil?” Read on to find out the differences between synthetic oil vs. regular oil and full synthetic oil vs. synthetic blend with the service center experts at McCaddon Buick GMC.

What is Conventional (Regular) Oil?

Conventional oil, or “regular” oil is a petroleum based substance that has been used in internal combustion engines to lubricate their internal parts and reduce engine wear. Motor oil is distilled from crude oil that’s mined from the ground, and it also works to protect your car’s engine from high temperatures.

What is Synthetic Oil?

Synthetic oil is petroleum based like regular oil, but it’s more stable and provides enhanced lubrication properties. Synthetic oils oxidize less easily than conventional oils, and are also better at retaining protective properties. They’re chemically developed from petrochemicals in intense processes to provide specific elements that make them superior (and more expensive) than conventional oils. Additional qualities of synthetic oils include:

  • Are less viscous at lower temperatures
  • Offer enhanced engine cleaning properties
  • Better protect critical turbocharger parts (when equipped)

How do Full Synthetic vs. Synthetic Blends Differ?

In addition to synthetic oils and conventional oils (often called mineral oils), Broomfield drivers may come across oils called “synthetic blends.” These are composed of part synthetic oil and part conventional oil, which aids in reducing the cost vs. choosing full synthetic, but also provides better properties vs. standard conventional oil.

Note: Remember that some vehicles do require full synthetic oil. If you aren’t sure what type of oil your vehicle needs, it will be detailed in your owner’s manual.
